Everything Sounds Cool in Gypsy Swing

Everything Sounds Cool in Gypsy Swing

You know the old joke about singing the telephone book? Well, I’ll bet you’ve never heard a public health advisory turned into song lyrics before!

Everything, but everything,  sounds way more cool when the words are set to Gypsy Swing music.

But it takes an award-winning wit like Canadian singer-songwriter BenSures.com (and some fairly big prairie oysters) to turn a chunk of the tax code into one verse of this gypsy-jazz-style comedy song.

Everything Sounds Cool in Gypsy Swing  is my new all-time favorite song – at least,  to be fair, let’s say it is my new favorite (favourite) in the somewhat obscure category of Canadian roots/acoustic musical humour (or humor, for our friends living south of the 49th).

The lightly satirical song is something of a cultural specialty of ours up here in the Great White North, as faithful listeners to the Irrelevant Show and other such programs on CBC radio (national public broadcaster) can attest. I’d go so far as to say that, as a nation, Canada revels in the sardonic eyebrow lift just as much as in the beer-fuelled belly laugh.  And here, tongue firmly in cheek, the Canadian folk/roots/acoustic singer-songwriter Ben Sures delivers.
