There are several essential items that every Girl Scout leader, no matter what level her troop she leads, needs in her bag. When you organize and plan your troop meetings, it is important to remember:
- The craft materials and directions
- Your camera for your Girl Scout scrapbook pictures
- Your binder with all of your important paperwork and contact information
- Troop Kaper Chart
- Coloring pages
- Books you will be reading
- Anything else you require to have the meeting the runs smoothly and effortlessly
You must also remember to bring your leader bag to each and every meeting. There are certain items that remain in your bag and do not change from week to week. They are essential for being organized. I would be at a loss if I did not have my binder and bag with me!
Girl Scout Leader Binder
The most important item a Girl Scout Leader should have in her bag is her binder. This binder is an Investment that will not need replacing if you buy quality and not one from the dollar store. You will also need to buy dividers with tabs.Inside your binder, you will have different sections for your paperwork.
The first section should be for all Girl Scout leader materials such as leader meeting agendas, tax-exempt forms, your troop roster, and any information about field trips and training.
The next section should be for checklists such as dues and attendance forms.
The third section should be for the Blanket Permission forms and the girls Health History form.
The last section should be for Girl Scout leader materials that you have received at your training sessions. You will be given a lot of valuable information at Girl Scout leader training. If you keep them handy in your binder, you will always know where they are.
Games for Girl Scouts Book
The book Games for Girl Scouts is one that every leader must have in her bag. Whether you have five minutes left before the end of a meeting or want to tie in an international game with World Thinking Day, this book has everything you need. There are a multitude of games that can be played no matter what level of scouts you lead.
There are games for small groups or large groups, games that are for younger Daisies and Brownies, and games for Juniors and older Scouts. This book is truly an investment for leaders at all levels, as the book grows as your troop does. I have had mine for years and it is with me at every meeting!
Girl Scout Leaders Need a First Aid Kit
Every Girl Scout Leader’s bag needs to have a first aid kit. Paper cuts and skinned knees happen. It is necessary to be prepared for these minor injuries, as a Band Aid with some ointment can cure almost any little cut. Younger girls might like fancy bandages, like Hello Kitty or a Disney Princess.
Never have a meeting or a field trip without this, as it is part of the “cover your behind” in case there is a problem. How can you tell a parent that her kid did not get a bandaid when she scraped up her knee because you did not have one to treat this injury?
Safety Check-Before you meet with your troop again in the fall, go through your First Aid kit and throw out any expired medication. Add fresh bandages and make sure you are well stocked on all other necessary supplies.
Coloring Pages and Puzzles
Busy Hands Won’t Get Into Trouble!
In addition to having Games for Girl Scouts to fill in those last few minutes of the meeting, Girl Scout leaders should have coloring pages and puzzles in their leader bag.
For Daisy Girl Scouts who are earning their Daisy petals, there are a few different coloring book pages that can be found at Scouting Web.
At Making Friends, Girl Scout leaders can find coloring pages, word searches and mazes. Color Time also has coloring pages for leaders.
For Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts who can read, you can create your own word searches at Discovery Education. You can make them as easy or as difficult as you wish. Simply select your topic, put in the words, and print out the puzzle. It is all free and it is a terrific resource for Girl Scout leaders.
Buy a Chic and Funky Tote Bag for Your Girl Scout Leader Essentials
The tote bag that you will be bringing to every meeting needs to be sturdy, yet stylish. There is no need to be frumpy! Do not buy a cheap or flimsy bag that will have to be replaced by the end of the year. Even if you wind up not staying as the leader, you will still have a fashionable tote bag to take to other places and store other things.
The bag pictured above is from a company called SCOUT-it says so on the label! This bag is just what leaders need, as it comes in many different colors to suit your sense of style. It is waterproof, and it has three pockets in the front for important items that you need to keep accessible (tissues, your phone, badges you want to hand out that day, pencils, etc.). Unlike a typical tote bag, this one zippers at the top, keeping it closed when you want it to be (hiding a surprise for the girls, for example). When you put it back into your car or min van, you won’t have to worry about the contents spilling all over the place.
This tote measures 11 by 9 by 4-1/2 inches and is easy to clean.
If you are looking for a larger tote bag for all of your items, this one from SCOUT is definitely worth the money. You will use it for years as a leader and for other activities. This Girl Scout leader bag measures 16 by 12 by 5.5-inches, and the handle drops 8-inches. There are four pockets-two pleated on one side and two flat on the other. It also zippers at the top and is very durable.
A Girl Scout leader needs to bring a lot to every meeting. Bring it all in style!
