What do you get for a Second Grader?
As a grandparent, I am often in a dilemma as to what to buy for the children and what it is that they might like to have for birthdays, Christmas and also for surprise gifts too. When I really don’t know something about my grand-kids, I tend to ask them. I really love the complete honesty of a child too.
The answers provided here on this page were from my own 7 year old granddaughter. I have to admit that I was surprised at what her particular favorite things were, and what it was that she liked best in school.
If you look inside the mind of a typical seven year old then you might just be a bit surprised. You can find here some toys and books that these second grader boys and girls like.
Some Kids Love to Show Off at this Age
A 7 year Old Girl Reveals Her Favorite Things
I asked my granddaughter to tell me about some of the things that she really liked. And you can see by these answers they were a little bit short and sweet! Maybe because she was doing her own typing. Her answers got a little bit longer when I took over the typing instead. Here’s what she said.
“I like dogs, and cats. I like bikes and scooters. I love art. I love my family. My family is very nice to me but even though they make me cry they are nice”.

Kids who Love to Craft and Make Things
Young kids often love to paint and make things.
Don’t let the actual title of this book fool you. It is a fun craft and activity book for girls. Even if this particular girl cannot fully read everything yet, it is a book that you can look through and complete together. Or you can let her work through it on her own and also figure things out independently if that is what she likes to do.
This book has 52 different creative adventures and activities based on drawing, painting, printmaking, paper crafts and also mixed media. It should be an ideal gift for budding young artists and keep them busy for a while too.
What She likes About School
Here my granddaughter tells me what it is that she likes about school which is useful to know when looking for what to buy: I like school because I like to play with my friends. I love school because I like my teacher. My friends and I play handball and soccer.
My favorite subjects are Science and Math. I like Science because one day we made mucus! It was fun, and I liked making it. I like Math because I learn a lot from it. I learned that 5×5 is 25, and 3×3 is 9. I like Science because we learned about germs. I like Math because we learned a lot about Math.
Santa Brought Her a Razor Graffiti Scooter

Graffetti Razor Scooters For a Second Grader
My grand daughter was extremely happy with her Razor Graffiti Scooter which makes riding around even more fun than normal. She rode it around and around, making chalk drawings and impressions on the patio and sidewalk as she went. She put the chalk on it and out the door she went making squigglies and loving every moment of it.
Razor Graffiti Chalk Scooter: This type of scooter has chalk in the back of it, so as kids ride on it they can make fun and novel designs too. It adds a bit more interest to just riding around when you can also make some chalked art work as you go along.
Having Fun With Origami

Making origami by folding paper can be a really good and inexpensive activity for kids to do. Some 7 year olds might need a little help and assistance with some of the instructions for making origami and especially if they have never made any before. You can find lots of videos on this craft on YouTube as well as getting books aimed at children. This was a jumping frog that the kids made and then we had a lot of fun with doing frog races and seeing how far each one would go. Fun competitions can be another thing that appeal to this age group in particular.
What about Books and Reading?
The question I asked was do you like to read, and what books do you like? You cannot assume that every child loves reading and some of them prefer either stories or factual books instead. For this one, I told her I would type instead and you can see that her answers are a little longer because I’m doing all the actual work!
“I like books because you learn a lot. I like books because they’re fun to read and they’re interesting. I like Animal books and Pilgrim books.
My favorite book is Miss Piggly Wiggly. The story is about a woman who has magic and she helps kids who get in big trouble. Her stories are very funny. I read these in Kindergarten and Grade 1, and I still read them in Grade 2.
Today I am reading Cornelia and the Audacious Escapades of the Somerset Sisters (it’s a long Title and shown below). I have been reading it for 2 days. I like the book because it is about sisters, and I like the cover because it has a dog face.”
A Good book for a Young Reader
I watched the excitement of my granddaughter with reading this book, and figure that if she likes it then other girls might also like it and enjoy it too.
Play Using Toys and Imagination

Littlest Pet Shop Toys -are Fun due to the Small and Cute Animals
The Littlest Pet Shop Range continues to be a firm favorite. My Granddaughters have so many of these toys to enjoy playing with, both the little pet animals and creatures and also many fun accessories too. Imaginative play, both alone and with others is a favorite activity of young kids.
As a Grandparent I really love to buy things that I know the kids can learn from and hopefully have fun with as well. I hope you enjoyed this candid look into what a 2nd grader likes. You can leave any comments about this topic in the comments section below.
